Cameron pretends to be Libertarian, changes tack with the wind

Ian Parker-Joseph dismisses Cameron and introduces the Libertarian Party.

Out of the blue mist comes Cameron, trying to convince his European partners that he is a Libertarian. Trying very hard to convince those around him that he had nothing to do with the state of the nation as it sits today.

Paying lip service to a Libertarian agenda now shows how feeble a leader the Tories really have, not strong enough to follow Conservative principles, still backed by big business, still intent on taking us into Europe, still part of the problem, not the solution.

A week ago Cameron was in Prague, to address the party conference of ODS, the future European parliamentary partners of the Tories. Founded by Thatcherite ideologue Václav Klaus, the party is receptive to what is a very rare message today from a politician - "fight for freedom".

His speech has sickened me, not for its content, but that it has come from a man trying desperately to change tack as he realises that the wind of opposition to the European Commission bulldozer grows across Europe.

“So there are many battles we must fight together, and my message to you today is a simple one - a message that I know you will understand more than most. The battle for freedom and opportunity is never finally won. In each generation, those of us who believe in freedom, in human potential, in the idea that the strength of our society comes from the energy and industry and creativity of our people; those of us who believe in these things must be ready to fight for them because the enemies of freedom are never finally vanquished. They always live to fight another day. Today we can see the enemies of freedom preparing a renewed assault on our liberty. They do not mean to harm us. In fact, they mean to help us. But their ideas are out of date, their methods have failed and their advance must be derailed. I am speaking of the politicians and public officials who believe that they know best how to organise our lives. That they are the experts, so they must have the power. You can find them everywhere – in my country, in your country and in the EU itself. They are the last defenders of the bureaucratic age, an age before the information revolution and our new world of freedom that makes it possible to put real power in people’s hands. But in their desire to control, to regulate, to direct, the defenders of the bureaucratic age have over-reached themselves. They have gone too far. They have tried to do too much. And it has exposed the historic error of their ways.

“In Britain, bureaucratic over-reach has seen the Labour Government creeping further and further into the lives of British people. Millions of families sucked into a complex system of tax credits. An army of tax collectors that is now almost as big as our actual army. Fingerprinting children at school. And this week we saw a shocking consequence of this bureaucratic over-reach: a scandal where the government has lost the names, addresses and bank details of almost every family in the country. Are they learning the lesson? Do they accept that bureaucracy has gone too far? Of course not. They are stuck in the bureaucratic age. So they now want to take personal information about everyone in the country and store it on a national identity register. We are seeing this bureaucratic over-reach in the EU too. The desire for harmonisation and homogenisation – on tax, on regulation, on so many aspects of public and private life. It is the last gasp of an outdated ideology, a philosophy that has no place in our new world of freedom, a world which demands that we fight this bureaucratic over-reach and lead Europe into the hope and potential of a new, post-bureaucratic age.”

Fine sentiments Mr Cameron, well chosen words Mr Cameron. Unfortunately I don't believe you.

I cannot forget that you were complicit in putting together the totalitarian world that we now live in. It is clear that you see the writing on the wall, seeing the Labour juggernaut beginning to crumble, and you are hearing the squeals.

It is too little, too late by the Tories...

We shall not forget that you did not oppose, and in most cases actively supported the 26,000 new draconian laws, the 3000 new criminal offences that have been created. That is not the action of a Libertarian.

We shall not forget that it was a Tory whip who wanted to silence the ability of the public in knowing what you are doing and spending our money on, who received Tory backing with his Freedom of Information Amendment Bill. That is not the action of a Libertarian.

We shall not forget that it was a Tory Government who signed the Maastricht Treaty that has given the European Commission so much power over us and our lives. That is not the action of Libertarians.

If you wish to espouse Libertarianism, perhaps you would like to defect, to the newly formed Libertarian Party, but remember, we will only be accepting those who truly believe in a Libertarian future, not those who just want to sail with the prevailing wind.

No Mr Cameron, you are no Libertarian, and to pretend to be so does no credit whatsoever to your own credibility nor to that of your party.

Time for the change, Time to root out the corruption.

If you want a government that will put the interests of the UK and its people first, then consider the Libertarian Party as the one for you.

The message to the other political parties is clear.

The United Kingdom, its peoples, its culture, constitution, history and institutions are not for sale.
